March is Women's History Month, a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women throughout history. In honor of this, we’re taking a look back at the power of women supporting each other in health and wellness spaces—because when women lift each other up, both in fitness and in life, incredible things happen.
For centuries, women have found strength—not just in their muscles, but in their communities. Whether it’s gathering in parks for group workouts, forming all-female running clubs, or joining modern-day fitness classes, women have always supported each other in their health and wellness journeys. Today, we see this same spirit alive in gyms, online communities, and group training programs where encouragement and accountability fuel success.
Historically, women’s exercise wasn’t always encouraged. In the 1800s, women were expected to remain delicate, and strenuous physical activity was considered unladylike. But by the early 1900s, women were breaking barriers, forming early fitness clubs and taking up strength training. The Women’s League of Health and Beauty, founded in the 1930s in the UK, was one of the first large-scale women’s fitness movements, promoting group exercise as a way to build confidence and camaraderie.
In the 1970s and 80s, the rise of aerobics classes brought women together in a new way. No longer was fitness just about individual effort—it became a social movement, where women motivated each other to push past limits and celebrate progress.
Today, group training, boot camps, and fitness classes continue to thrive, bringing women together in ways that go beyond just exercise. Whether in a local workout group, an online accountability community, or a CrossFit gym, the power of women supporting women is undeniable.
So why does this matter? Research shows that people who work out in a supportive group are more likely to stay consistent and reach their goals. Women, in particular, thrive in environments where encouragement and connection are present. When you know someone is expecting you at class, you’re far less likely to hit snooze on that early-morning alarm.
Beyond accountability, fitness communities provide emotional and mental support. We celebrate each other’s victories—big and small. We lift each other up on tough days and push through workouts we wouldn’t have done alone.
Strength isn’t just about how much weight you can lift—it’s about the confidence that comes from showing up for yourself, surrounded by women who believe in you. Group workouts aren’t just about breaking a sweat; they’re about breaking down barriers, building confidence, and proving that we are capable of more than we ever thought possible.
Fitness should never be about competition. It’s about collaboration, encouragement, and growth. When women support each other in their fitness journeys, we create something bigger than just a workout—we create a movement that empowers us all.
