As parents, grandparents, or role models, we often wonder what kind of example we’re setting for the younger generation. Are we teaching them the value of hard work, kindness, and perseverance? But one area that often gets overlooked is how we model the importance of physical activity and overall wellness.
Recently, I asked the participants in our January accountability challenge to reflect on their reasons for joining the group. The overwhelming majority mentioned one of two things: they wanted to set a good example for their kids or grandkids, or they wanted to keep up with them physically. These responses struck a chord with me because it highlights something vital—our children are always watching.
Megan Harris, a member of our January challenge group shared this about her why: “I want to build healthier habits not just for myself, but for my family too. By seeing their mom and dad set goals for each other for a healthier lifestyle, my hope is that our kiddos will see just how important it is to prioritize our health. I want my kids to grow up in an environment where making healthy choices feels normal and easy. And honestly, I just want to have more energy to keep up with them—whether it’s playing outside, running around the house, or just being present for the little moments. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about setting us up to feel good and enjoy life together.”
When our kids see us prioritize our health, it sends a powerful message. It tells them that taking care of your body and mind isn’t just something you “should” do; it’s something you get to do. It’s a privilege.
At EmpowerFit HC, this is a value we wholeheartedly embrace. That’s why we always welcome parents to bring their kids along to our workout sessions. Whether those kids are jumping in and mimicking the exercises or simply running around the room, they’re seeing something invaluable: adults they love and respect investing in their well-being.
It’s amazing to watch little ones pick up a set of mini weights or try to copy their mom’s squats. They’re learning, in real time, that moving your body is something to enjoy, not dread. They’re witnessing the joy of community and the strength that comes from showing up for yourself.
In a world where screens and sedentary habits dominate, these moments matter. Encouraging movement, demonstrating balance, and showing that self-care is non-negotiable can plant seeds that grow into lifelong healthy habits for the next generation.
So, as we begin this new year, let’s remember that taking care of ourselves isn’t just for our benefit—it’s for the benefit of those who look up to us. Every step, every workout, and every healthy choice is a chance to lead by example and inspire the ones we love most.
At EmpowerFit HC, we’re here to support you in your journey—whether it’s through accountability challenges, group workouts, or simply cheering you on as you take the first step. Bring your kids along and let them see the incredible things you’re capable of. Let’s empower the next generation to view fitness not as a chore but as a celebration of what our bodies can do.
